Montessori curriculum at Virginia Montessori Academy
Children learn by doing in prepared classrooms. Guides observe each child, offer a lesson when they are ready, and give them time to explore and practice.
Learning in the infant and toddler rooms
For children under three, guides follow each child’s development rather than a fixed lesson plan. Babies reach, grasp and move with suitable materials nearby. Young toddlers practice language, movement and simple care of their classroom. Older toddlers spend more time choosing work and practicing everyday skills.

Learning in Children’s House
Children’s House brings preschool and the kindergarten year together in a mixed-age classroom. Children typically have a morning work period of about three hours. They choose materials and take part in individual and small-group lessons, with time to repeat work as they learn.
The five Montessori areas are practical life, sensorial work, language, mathematics and culture. Children also spend time gardening. Older children can help younger classmates as part of the mixed-age community.
